Direct Mail Hacks: How to Send a Mail Piece NOBODY Can Ignore

If you've ever used direct mail, you know it's mostly a numbers game. Even when you get the perfect list and the perfect message, a lot of your recipients are STILL going to throw your message away without even looking at it.

What if you could significantly improve your open rate? Even if it costs significantly more to get noticed by your recipient, is it ever worth the cost?

In this video, I'll show you a few creative ways to basically FORCE your recipients to open up your mail and see your message (because they'd be crazy not to take a closer look at these kinds of mail pieces).

aja656 : Do you have any stats on the effectiveness of using the express mail envelope with front door delivery compared to the standard #10 envelope in the mailbox?
Shawn McNamara : Wowwww. Thank you for putting up this video. I have a marketing consultancy business and I planned on sending out hand written letters along with some USB flash drives with a personalized video. But the video cards are a game changer... awesome content! Side question, have you had any good ROI with regular old envelopes with handwritten addresses and stamps?
CatAcres : Although the ideas are cool, with DM, it's all about testing the numbers. How much does it cost for a prospect and then how much does it cost for a customer? If you're sending to women, items that look like wedding invitations will get opened more, as an example. Sending to kids, it should look like a comic. In other words, what would someone actually buy to read. Put your message in that and send it to them. Your advice on micro lists is good.
brightpage1020 : Omg that amazing tech card that copies what I can find on YT without the preroll bS seems meant for an extremely specific audience… because, like most of my kids’ noisy toys, that thing will break and be tossed in the trash almost as soon as it’s opened. Heaven forbid I accidentally open one of those things in the office hallway! Dho! That’d be like a verbal right there. Coworkers certainly could goose each other with that, though.

I’m from a resort retirement community. It seems just right for the demographic here.

Jim Piety : Love the review. Completely agree that direct mail is coming back as we all have overwhelming email inboxes. I'm tempted to start using direct mail to identify real estate properties for sale and this is helpful. Right now, I'm more focused on texting because of the high open rates
Eric Fischnaller : Great breakdown Jason. Typically I recommend to clients I design direct mail for to use an A2 envelope and hire some young people to address and hand stamp envelopes. Adding a sticker to the reverse at the seal also increases odds of opening its those extra personal touches that increase perceived cost and value. An A2 is usually used for wedding invitations or the like. The letter was well done for sure
CatAcres : The issue with the piece was the first comment was about them, asking for a review. The game was an obvious tactic and didn't do anything for me to create a connection with their sales team. What worked was, the hand written part, as well as the ease of returning the letter. I would however suggest that they also offer an online method for immediate response.
